Happy Wheels is a single player online flash game. The player can choose from a large list of possible characters to play as and can also choose from a variety of levels to play in. The player also has the opportunity to construct custom levels as they desire. In general, to win the game, the player must either collect a number of tokens or must cross a finish line with a vehicle. While the player tries to win the game, the game features various different obstacles which the player must escape from. These obstacles include falling rocks, boulders and other injury causing objects. There is a display of graphic violence in the game when the player is injured or injures people in the game.

The game falls under the ragdoll physics and black comedy game categories. The game was initially developed by Jim Bonacci and Jason Schymick in the year 2010.
